Dear Hettienne, These pigs in China were living in a totally barren, dark shed – stuffed into tiny stalls, lined up as if they were sausages already in a packet. One sow was so large she could not fit into her crate. Her hind legs were resting on the back of the pig in the neighbouring stall and her own back was pressed hard against the bars. The suffering was palpable. One of the farmers told us that the pigs’ manure went straight into the river. The bright green, polluted waterway at the back of the farmhouse suggested that he was telling the truth.
